This
project is another of our favorite tributes to Yankee frugality and
inventiveness. The
building had begun its life as a large chicken coop and through
subsequent additions and renovations had evolved into a design and
assembly facility for amusement park rides.
Our client,
non-profit NFI North had acquired the property because of its
adjacency to the Hopkinton High School for the purpose of converting
it to a day school for special education.
The location allowed greater and more flexible interaction with the
public school system and would cut some kids’ commuting time by
hours. Local towns
enthusiastically anticipated the new facility for both its
educational and economic advantages.
The
slab-on-grade building offered plenty of space, but little else
appropriate to a school. Years of additions had resulted in
quirky and isolated spaces and numerous step-ups and step-downs.
The high bay truck garage lent itself to indoor recreation and
assembly, but lacked windows, interior finishes and adequate
insulation. A new corridor system, sized to public school
standards had to be superimposed over the unrelated existing plan.
