Renovation and addition to the existing 1950 fire station

The existing fire station (6,267 SF), built in 1950, had served the department well but was undersized for current needs and lacked proper building systems such as sprinklers and ventilation.

The original site was determined to be the best location in town, despite a tight triangular lot that sloped 12’ from one end to the other and was bordered by a stream and two roads.

The program included: dorm space, offices and dayroom to accommodate future on-site firefighters. To add to the mix the station had to remain in use during construction.

Our solution was to add a 9,468 SF addition on two sides that took advantage of the grade drop for new bays on one side and parking off of a town road on another side.

The new design allowed the existing station to be used during construction and renovations were started once the new bays were complete.

To top it off the new and old portions were blended together with the help of new pitched roofs over the existing flat roofs and a brick face at the addition. The project was under budget by about $200,000.
