Sugar River Savings Bank in New London had a
three-part problem. The small branch office was looking tired and dated
and was starting to feel out-of-place in its prominent main street
location. A competitor had a new building on the next corner. They
needed a facelift to change the image of the bank without major cost or
disruption. They also needed to create wheelchair access at the front
entry in a way compatible with the first goal. Thirdly, they needed an
expanded drive-up facility that would not visually dominate their
quaint, small town image. The physical design problems were more easily
solved, but the sensitivity of the image issues required several
generations of computer graphic mock-ups to convince the bank and then
the town that the “new” bank would be an asset to Main Street.
